Sung Byunghee at Kiaf SEOUL 2026 Special Exhibition 《HUMAL》

Gallery COLLAST presents Sung Byunghee at 《HUMAL》, a special exhibition at Kiaf SEOUL 2026.

For Sung, art is not a means of covering wounds or offering easy consolation. It is a sharp blade that cuts deep into the wound, compelling us to confront what hurts and to look directly at what might otherwise remain hidden.

Her paintings explore the unstable territory between consciousness and the unconscious, bringing together personal memories, wounds, trauma, instinct, and anxiety. Visceral bodies, eyes, hearts, animals, and monstrous forms repeatedly emerge throughout her work, not as literal representations, but as metaphors for the multiple forces that coexist within the human self.

In works including Animus, Persona & Shadow, Drifting, Monster Garden, Molt, Three Divided Memories, and Confinement, Sung moves between the deeply personal and the social. Inner conflict expands into questions of human existence, transformation, mortality, and the anxieties of contemporary society.

Presented within 《HUMAL》, Sung Byunghee’s works blur the boundaries between human and animal, reason and instinct, the visible and the hidden. Rather than turning away from darkness, her paintings ask what it means to acknowledge it as part of ourselves—and what might become visible when we do.

갤러리 콜라스트는 Kiaf SEOUL 2026 특별전 《HUMAL》에서 성병희 작가의 작품을 선보입니다.

성병희에게 예술은 상처를 덮거나 손쉬운 위로를 건네는 방식이 아닙니다. 작가에게 예술은 상처의 깊은 곳까지 파고드는 날카로운 칼날과도 같습니다. 한 번 더 아프더라도 외면했던 것을 바라보고, 자신의 상처와 내면을 직면하게 하는 것이 그림이 지닌 힘이라고 작가는 말합니다.

성병희의 회화는 의식과 무의식 사이의 불안정한 영역에서 출발합니다. 기억과 상처, 트라우마, 본능과 불안이 서로 얽히며 화면 위에서 날것의 신체와 눈, 심장, 동물과 괴물적 형상으로 나타납니다. 작품에 반복적으로 등장하는 이러한 이미지들은 특정한 존재를 묘사하기보다 인간 내면에 공존하는 감정과 충동, 기억과 갈등을 드러내는 은유적 언어로 기능합니다.

《Animus》, 《Persona & Shadow》, 《Drifting》, 《Monster Garden》, 《Molt》, 《Three Divided Memories》, 《Confinement》 등 이번에 선보이는 작품들은 개인의 내면에서 출발해 인간의 존재와 변화, 그리고 동시대 사회의 불안으로 시선을 확장합니다.

《HUMAL》에서 성병희의 작품은 인간과 동물, 이성과 본능, 드러난 것과 감춰진 것 사이의 경계를 흔듭니다. 작가는 인간의 어두운 면을 외면하기보다 그것 역시 자신의 일부로 바라보며, 그 안에 존재하는 감각과 본능을 정면으로 마주하게 합니다.
